CHA Votes Voting Story: Jerri Sutton

The first time I voted I was 20 years old and a student at Florida A&M University. It was finally Election Day and I was so excited to vote for the first time. Growing up I learned about the Civil Rights Movement and how my parents and grandparents’ generation fought for my right to vote as an African American woman.

I also had just gone off to college and wanted to feel like an adult, and in my mind there was no better way to feel like an adult than voting. I grew up in Chattanooga, and was registered to vote there, so I drove home from Florida to Chattanooga to vote.

My polling place was Eastdale Community Center, and after I entered I realized I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Thankfully, the poll workers that were there were incredibly helpful and explained what I needed to do to mark my ballot. When I voted, they didn’t have “I Voted” stickers, but they did have stars, so I put on my star sticker and felt accomplished. I went home and told all my friends that I had just voted and made sure that they were voting.

I hope you’ve made your plan and will join me in voting Early this Election.
